Building a website from scratch takes a lot of time and effort and it’s not something that you can do overnight. One needs to think of the design element, the content, website name, choosing the best hosting plan, so on and so forth…
I think the biggest challenge is to be exactly clear about the purpose of having a website…Why do you want to start a website in the first place? Is it because it sounds cool to have one (if that is the reason though, you must stop right away), or is it because you genuinely have something of value to share. Having a website is also a great way for hustlers like me as it is an excellent platform to build your portfolio and showcase your skill-sets. I am a top-rated freelancer on Upwork and having an online presence with my website is a great way to connect with my clients. Most importantly, if done correctly, your blog can give you a steady income source through Affiliate Marketing.
Whatever, you decide – be clear of one thing right from the beginning. Having a website involves recurring costs in terms of having a domain name and web hosting. And web hosting does not come cheap, whatever the promos tell you! Because with hosting, you will also need to take other things like an SSL certificate and the combined cost of the package will easily come to about 5000 INR ($80) per annum.
Also, if you go with a premium theme like me, it will set you back by another 6-7K ($100). There are a lot of people out there who teach about starting a blog for free but that’s not the case really. Like you may opt for a free theme to start with, but they are limited in their functions and customization options, that I don’t see one going too far with a free theme. If you don’t have any knowledge of CSS and PHP, there isn’t much that you can do to give your website a professional look.
For my previous website and this one, I spent the initial one month working on the content and the layout plan. But once this was done, I handed my website to a professional designer to get a final look hat didn’t seem like the work of an amateur. This will again cost you money – anything starting at Rs. 10,000 ($100) to as high as you have the budget for!
So, my suggestion is – don’t start a website just for the heck of it! Also, if you are managing a website with a regular job, don’t really have any plans of investing a lot of time and energy in growing a website traffic – a better option would be to write on a platform like Medium. Here’s a great article dissecting the pros and cons of using a platform like Medium….
Once you are done deciding the platform you want to have your blog on, there are zillions of other things to think about…like should we think of a name first, or should we start with getting the look of the blog in place? Wait, there is content also to take care of! Let me get all the content in place first. Woof….all this is so confusing!
And I understand that a lot of you out there who are planning to get your website in place must also be going through the same confusion. And that’s where I got this idea of documenting each of the steps I take as I go about building this website from scratch.
I will share all the details with you, like the hosting plan that I select, creating my social media pages, where I am getting my images from to how I will go about building my audience! Also, do keep in mind that I don’t have a massive budget to jazz up my blog with all the fancy tools available in the market. So it’s going to be one step at a time for me here.
So, I really hope that you won’t go back disappointed with what I have here, will have a great time and will find a lot of things here that can add value to your journey towards building an online presence…
