When you buy a hosting plan for your website, one gets all excited about the fact that you get your own professional looking email ID’s in the package. Wow!
email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org – these are the two id’s that I didn’t waste even two minutes in creating. This was for my first website www.digitalintelligence.in that I had created about 4 years back. The website doesn’t exist anymore but I got to learn a lot from the time I spent building this website from scratch.
And one of things I learnt was the horrible interface these webhosts provided. The mailbox that you get from your hosting company looks terrible and I never really felt like using it. Also, it was a pain to login everytime you wanted to check your mail. Now compare this with my gmail account where I used to be logged in all the time on my desktop as well as my phone. If only I could use my gmail account for my business as well but I didn’t want to let go of the @digitalintellience.in part of my email address.
Thankfully, this time I have a better option available. And what’s more, I can get custom domain email addresses through my Google account and the process is simple enough too!
In fact, there’s a great post written on this topic by Melyssa Griffin – How To Use Gmail Custom Domain
All you need to do is to allocate 30 minutes from your schedule to this task and voila – you’re done! Also, do note that this service from Google is not free anymore. But don’t worry, the charges are quite nominal compared to the kind of ease of use and services you’ll get in return. Also, you the option of choosing between a Basic (for people like me with a single user account), Business and Enterprise accounts.
