Though the opportunities for freelancers in Digital Marketing is immense, the competition between freelancers to get a share of the freelancing pie is getting intense too. There is no space for mediocrity...clients look for very specific skills while hiring for a digital marketing project like a Facebook ads expert, SEO expert, PPC ads specialist or a Sales Funnel specialist. There is no place for generalists - a jack of all trades and master of none!
Also, digital marketing is like an ocean and there's no way one can become a master at all the areas. So, you will have to decide what is it that interests you the most and you will have to go for it with all your might!
As a freelancer, you will be mostly working alone. So, you will have to be really good at the skills that you offer. And this is the tricky part - where do you go to acquire these skills? Those YouTube videos that have loads of subscribers or sign up for those weekly newsletters that promise to tell you all their secrets if only you will give them your email id's and start reading their "occasional emails' (which BTW, are full of affiliate links). Well, the fact of the matter is that all of them, like you and me are in it to make money and there is hardly anything of value that you will learn from these "free" emails or videos.
These things can only be an additional source of information. But one can't expect to become an expert at a topic by these fee resources alone. These resources are quite unstructured and you will be wasting a lot of time trying to seive the real information from all the surrounding noise. Also, the online world is full of distractions and you may start reading about SEO and then you will find something really interesting abut Pinterest marketing and you will start reading about that too! And before you realise, you would have read or watched about a lot of things other than SEO, which gets postponed for the next day! Keeping the focus is the key here to save your time, effort, energy and moving ahead on the learning curve.
What works really well for me is taking a courses from online platforms like Udemy or signing up with an online mentor for their course. Equally important is applying all that I learn on my website and social media channels. If I want any further information, I go to YouTube and find extra information about the topic. Having your own website and social media channels is really important as it will help you put into practice all that you will learn online. I can't stress enough the importance of this...taking online courses is useless if you don't put the learnings into practice and see what works and what doesn't.
So, let me list down all the important digital marketing skills and courses that are in demand for freelancers. You can review each one of them in detail and then decide the skills that you want to go after!
